Onondaga County lies directly in the path of a critical bird migration route. Every year, millions of birds make their way south, following ancient migratory paths that pass through our region. For example, on the evening of August 21, 2024, and throughout the night, over 800,000 birds migrated south at an altitude of approximately 1,500 feet.
This presents a growing concern as wind turbine projects are being proposed for areas like Curtain Road, which stands at around 800 feet in elevation. The wind turbines planned for this area could reach heights of up to 680 feet, placing them dangerously close to the altitudes where these migratory birds fly. This raises serious risks of bird collisions and disruptions to their natural migration patterns, potentially impacting bird populations and the ecosystem.
The importance of preserving these migration routes cannot be overstated. Birds play a vital role in maintaining a healthy environment, from pest control to pollination. The placement of massive wind turbines within such a sensitive area could have long-term environmental consequences that outweigh the benefits.
As we evaluate the future of energy in our region, it's crucial to consider the balance between sustainable development and the protection of our natural wildlife.
